What We Believe

Picture
We believe that God is still speaking.
In the United Church of Christ (UCC), members, congregations and structures have the breathing room to explore and to hear ... for after all, God is still speaking and it is the job of humanity to listen for that still, small voice within each of us.

We believe that God calls us to be servants in the service of others and to be good stewards of the earth's resources. 'To believe is to care; to care is to do.

What We Believe about the Bible

The Bible is an amazing collection of sacred writings, compiled over thousands of years, preserved and passed on to us.  It contains all types of literature: creation, history, military conquests, poetry & songs, laws, stories of miracles, and what we call the Gospel (good news).  All of it is the story of the love of God and God's relationship with us.  It was written by particular people in a particular political, social and economic context who were inspired to write what they experienced. We call it the Living Word of God because each time we read it, different words and ideas stand out to us. We strive to learn more and more about the Bible, and we use it to guide what we say and do. Our church mostly uses and New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, but we also read from other versions to enhance our understanding.

Core Values of the
United Church of Christ

Continuing Testament - We are committed to hearing God's ancient story anew.  We listen for God's voice in all that we do.

Extravagant Welcome - We insist that God's table is open, and God's gift and claim in baptism are irrevocable.  We advocate justice for all.  We teach that evangelism is mission.  We are an ecumenical, interfaith, united and uniting church.

Changing Lives - We teach and preach about the transforming love of Jesus Christ.  We strive to be a vital place of worship, learning and service.  No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.

United Church of Christ Statement of Faith
In the Form of a Doxology

We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit
God of our Savior Jesus Christ and our God,
And to your deeds we testify:
You call the worlds into being,
create persons in your own image,
and set before each one the ways of life and death.

You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin.

You judge people and nations by your righteous will
declared through prophets and apostles.

In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth,
our crucified and risen Savior,
you have come to us
and shared our common lot,
conquering sin and death
and reconciling the world to yourself.

You bestow
upon us your Holy Spirit,
creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ,
binding in covenant faithful people of all ages,
tongues and races.

You call us into your church
to accept the cost and joy of discipleship,
to be your servants in the service of others,
to proclaim the Gospel to all the world
and resist the powers of evil,
to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table,
to join him in his passion and victory.

You promise to all who trust you
forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace,
courage in the struggle for justice and peace,
your presence in trial and rejoicing,
and eternal life in your realm which has no end.

Blessing and honor, glory and power
be unto you.  Amen.
