Outreach Ministries at East Market St. UCC
A vital component of any church is the outreach ministry to the community. At East Market St. UCC, there are many ways to be involved and serve as a sign that God is present, active, and still speaking. There is always something to do and always someone in need. If you would like to help, please use the Contact Us link above.
The Lunch Bag Program
There are many children in our community that only get a good meal while they are in school. This ministry prepares and distributes lunch bags for grade school children so they will have nutritious food on the weekends.
**Our Lunch Bag Program received generous support for the 2014-15 school year from the David R. and Cheryl L. Venarge Fund of Akron Community Foundation.
School Uniforms for Middle School Children in Need
East Market St. purchases and supplies uniforms on an as needed basis for the East Community Learning Center's 7th and 8th graders.
Food Pantry:
East Market St. Emergency Food Pantry for those in need.
Willard Food Pantry - Serves clients in need of food assistance in the greater Akron area and beyond. Individuals and families seeking assistance must qualify based on income levels set by the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services Federal and State Funded Food Program guidelines. This is an all-volunteer project. There is no paid staff and all funding comes from donations by private individuals, local schools, local churches and commercial support.
Akron Urban Initiative
Akron Urban Initiative (AUI) is an active, ongoing collaboration among congregations of the United Church of Christ for the benefit of the urban area of Akron, Ohio. Programs and services are directed by and delivered through four churches: East Market Street, First Grace, Trinity and Willard. Located in challenged settings, our congregations are still committed to building sustainable churches with a passion for ministry to those in need. Confident in the efficiency of working together, the Akron Urban Initiative continues to expand our unique collaborative service and support model, and encourage its replication.

The Akron Urban Initiative has provided a Safety Town program for our Akron city children. Safety Town is a comprehensive five-day program designed to introduce young children, ages 4-6, to safety awareness. Classroom segments are safe, educational - and fun! Children receive real-world experience by practicing their classroom lessons on the streets of a specially designed, child-sized Safety Town which includes miniature buildings, traffic lights, school crossings, and other features typically found in the city. At East Market St. the dates are July 7 - 11. Other Akron urban UCC communities have other weeks, also.
Cub and Boy Scouts of America
For years, East Market St. has actively participated in the Cub and Boy Scouts of America by sponsoring Cub Pack #3037 and Boy Scout Troop #77.
